Reasons to be cheerful in 2012.

After seven days of hard work (and lots of laughs), our #TheGoodTimes newspaper is here, on the so-called ‘most depressing day of the year’, January 16, 2012, in all its bright-inked beauty.

TCOLondon made the newspaper by reaching out to all kinds of people online and finding out what makes them feel happy and inspired. It has seven sections; Peoples!, Lovely Money, Trees & Animals, Art & Stuff, Ink On Paper, Robots, etc., and Running & Jumping.

As well as stories about pothole gardeners, puppies, kids ruling the world, outdoor swimming, adbusting and bank bypassing there are exclusive interviews with the two rad Daves (Attenborough and Eggers), the ambitious dude behind the School Of Everything Dougald Hine, kids book writer and illustrator Dallas Clayton, and philanthropic inventor Professor Joshua Silver.

What’s more, the whole production process was made transparent on goodtimes.thechurchoflondon.com and an archive of its creation will continue to remain there for all to see.

Copies will be distributed around the capital today, January 16, 2012, by our own ‘happy van’ and other dedicated #TheGoodTimes distributors. A full list of stockists can be seen on the website.

And, for a limited time only, copies will be available on the Stack magazines shop, for just the price of postage and packing.

To celebrate the project, TCOLondon is heading to the White Horse on Hoxton Street, from 7pm, for beers and hangs.

Come down and join us!

These are troubled times, no doubt about it. But there’s no reason to wallow in adversity.

We’re putting a call out to find the people and organisations bringing some light to these dark days. Our search will cover politics, technology, the environment and practically any other walk of life, and when we’ve found our leading lights we’re going to make a one-off magazine about them.

We start on Monday 9 January 2012 and work for one week, printing our magazine and distributing it the following Monday, supposedly the most depressing day of the year.

You can follow our progress at goodtimes.thechurchoflondon.com or on Twitter by following #thegoodtimes, and you can join in too.

Tell us who we should include and what we should do with them, or do even more – write something, take pictures, or come and help us distribute the magazine.

If you’ve had enough of bad news days join us and let’s do something about it.

The American news magazine pays us a visit in London.

Our in-house mags, HUCK and Little White Lies, are celebrated by writer D’arcy Doran in a double-page spread of this week’s Time magazine, out today, January 6.

D’arcy visited us in London at the end of last year to check out TCOLondon HQ and get a sense of how we work and what we’re all about.

The feature, which includes quotes from our friends and partners Jeremy Leslie at Magculture and Steve Watson at Stack, is all about the persistence of print in the digital age and name drops a few of our customer publishing projects such as Google’s Think Quarterly and PlayStation’s Access.

Says D’arcy: “The Internet has been cast as print’s enemy, stealing readers and advertisers. But the digital revolution has also produced a generation of print publishing companies that is younger than Facebook.”

The complete article ‘Think Ink: Why Print is Being Embraced By Designers’ is available to read now at time.com.

Our partners and friends at Stack and Magculture are hosting the first 2012 Printout – a forum for magazine-y debate – tonight, January 5, at The Book Club, Shoreditch.

To kick off 2012 in style, they’ve invited the editors of three forward-thinking publications to ruminate on what the year ahead will hold for independent publishing.

There’s Alex Moshakis, editor of It’s Nice That, who will be filling us in on what the magazine/website/events organisers have got coming up next. Davey Spens from Boat has promised to reveal all about where the next issue will be going and what they’ll be doing differently this year. And Dan Byrne of Liverpool-based football magazine Spiel will be sharing the secrets of how they got big name advertisers from issue one, and how they’re planning to do even better before they reach their first birthday.

Plus there’ll be music from Supermundane, the design hands behind Fire & Knives, Anorak and Cagoule.

Tickets are £5 and can be purchased from the Stack website.

As part of HUCK #30 ‘The Public Space Issue’ we’ve launched a creative brief encouraging readers to get in touch and show us what they love about the public spaces that surround their homes.

Whether you live next door to a world-class surf spot, in the middle of a bustling metropolis or on a glacial ice cap out to sea, we want to see how you’re interacting with open spaces near you – even if it’s just having a picnic, throwing a party, building a treehouse or growing a guerrilla garden.

Do whatever you want, as long as you respect your fellow citizens and (kinda) play by the rules, document it – through photos, videos, letters or art – and send it to us so we can gather together the best bits in an ode to public space.

Your city belongs to you. Reclaim public space by doing something good, and help the world remember what’s great about your home.

Artists and skaters come to Shoreditch to celebrate old-school skateboarding.

To celebrate the glory days of eighties’ skateboarding when times were rocking and true legends were born, HUCK and Lovenskate are bringing their Rolling Back The Years exhibition – featuring eight old-school decks customised by eight artists – to the Red Gallery, Shoreditch, January 13 – 15, 2012.

For a pop-up show in Seignosse, France, seven artists – including Jimbo Philips (son of legendary ‘Screaming Hand’ Santa Cruz designer Jim Philips), Lovenskate’s Stu Smith, HUCK’s creative director Rob Longworth, Owen Tozer of Thisismadeup, awesome skate illustrator Richard Sayer (aka French), shred artist Schoph Shophield and local talent Benjamin Jeanjean – created designs inspired by the pools and mullets of old-school skateboarding, which were screen-printed onto decks at the Lovenskate studio.

And for the London stop of the tour UK skate legend Geoff Rowley will be joining the stellar lineup!

Alongside the decks, there’ll be a selection of jaw-dropping photographs that were captured exclusively for HUCK magazine in recent months by contributors from around the world.

But wait, there’s more! We’ll also be hosting a pop-up shop with Lovenskate and LCB at the Red Gallery, January 13 – 15, 12-6pm, where you can get your hands on rad Lovenskate gear, screen-prints of deck designs from the show, magazines, Vans products, Jimbo Philips x Volcom tees and other treats.
