Al Mackinnon turned down a desk-job as photo editor at Geographical Magazine to pursue a life spent chasing big waves. In 2007, Al became the first European to win the coveted Billabong XXL award for his iconic photograph of a surfer dwarfed by the largest wave ever ridden on African shores. His mail may be directed to a London-based address, but you’d be hard pressed to find Al in one place for too long. From Papua New Guinea to Jordan, Chile to Tanzania – wherever the world’s top surfers venture to, Al’s never far behind.
